The Power of One

In the film “The Power of One” low angle shots were used in certain areas to create more of an image. For example, in the scene where Botha yells “Hang him up!” a low angle shot is used. This shows up that Botha is the one in power and P.K is vulnerable. The director did this to show us Botha’s emotions and how PK is in trouble. This worked well with the dialogue. The two aspects combined together makes it more powerful as Botha is infuriated with PK making him yell “Hang him up!” This aspect can be compared to the movie “The Lion King” where Scar is at the edge of the cliff with his brother, Mufasa. Scar is dominating him which is shown with a low angle shot. In the film “The Power of One” music is used to dramatize the scenes or play with your emotions. For instance, music is used when Maria is hit in the head and killed. This makes the audience feel emotional and sad. The purpose of this was to make us feel sad and show us that this was a tragic event. This worked well with facial expressions showing us how other characters in the film felt at that moment too. Which we then can relate to and have empathy towards them. This reminds me of the movie “The Whale Rider” where you can hear a certain type of music when the whales are beached. This tells us that the scene is filled with emotion. In the film “The Power of One” facial expressions are used very often to display what the characters are feeling. For example, PK’s facial expressions are showing what he feels when Botha kills his chicken. This makes the audience understand that PK is very upset and angry with Botha for killing this best friend. This was used to show his feelings through the visual aspect of things.  This works well with close up shots which shows us this expressions in more detail.  This aspect can be compared to any movie with a character which goes to show that this aspect is very popular and it still has an impact on how stories are told.
